The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves - book cover - free trade

history ● violence ● society

Recommendation 5 / 5

As we are constantly bombarded with doom prophesies the book makes a really good job and puts all of that into greater perspective. Rational Optimist starts with a thesis that we are way better off than we ever were, and Matt Ridley makes convincing arguments that things will continue to improve. We don’t need to agree with the Ridley theme of optimism for the future to make this book worthwhile to read. The book offers much more than the title suggests.

Recommendation 5 / 5

I was highly impressed by this book. It describes the story of humankind which was pioneered by Paleolithic proto-humans. Yuval Noah Harari, the author of the book, focusses on the three major revolutions of our history – cognitive, agricultural and scientific. The book describes why we are the chosen ones by explaining the role of domestication of fire which played a gigantic role in our evolution. It explains how we have mastered our surroundings, increased food production, built cities, established and ruined empires and created trade networks. I don’t want to spoil the content ..
