“The Three-Body Problem” is the first novel of the “Remembrance of Earth’s Past” trilogy. A best-seller in its native China and very popular in the US. The book tells the story about Ye, a Chinese astrophysicist who tries to stop a mysterious global catastrophe that may have extraterrestrial origins. It offers a very different sort of plot than the usual space opera or whatever, but what impressed me the most was the obviously critical stance towards speaking about the cultural revolution in China…

It took me a while to finish this fiction novel, mostly because of its advanced idiomatic language. In addition, novels that cover ideological conflict require super-patience.

Nguyen succeeds in describing Oriental and Occidental stereotypes, the false promises and hypocrisy of both communist and democratic regimes. He also succeeds in capturing the angst and disappointment of refugees and their indomitable will to survive. The sell-out of ideology….
